Video Background: Moss Landing Marine Laboratory was trashed in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Built originally on a sandspit south of the estuary mouth, it was useless after that. The California State University System selected the new site on top of a magnificent Costanoan village mound, one occupied for thousands of years by craftsmen, families, artists and harvesters who lived in balance with the land the Creator gave us and that was California before "civilization" invaded. The rest is history, albeit one in distinctly parallel paths. Since federal funds (Federal Emergency Management Administration - FEMA) are involved, the construction project had no choice but to pay credence to the local indigenous community's concerns. Besides Ann Marie Sayers of the Indian Canyon Nation, you will see or hear Rosemary Gibbons, myself, Ken Croale (director of the lab), Bruce Bjornson (chief inspector),the archeologist (whose name I will update as soon as I can) and construction personnel.

We used an HITACHI MPEG Cam, a fantastic little tapeless digital camerawith a removable hard drive and a SONY Hi 8 as backup. I conceived and planned the video and Rosemary Gibbons was co-producer of this series. We both are interested in the issues facing Native Americans and colonialism, the effects on our families and traditions. The native people you will see in this video resource all are involved in the revitalization of the original California communities. This resource constructs Native American women and men as real people working tirelessly to protect and nurture their communities as well as the implementation of media work in a critical manner. As this develops, it will also grow to bring you resources on land, sovereignty, history and ways we deal with these issues together.

2. 2.1 MB Ann Marie Sayers - the chronology of CNAP = the Concurring Native American Parties - the local Native Americans who have worked in the process for over 5 years, meeting and traveling at their own expense at Moss Landing Marine Lab steadfastly ensuring that our ancestors and heritage are accorded some respect from Euro-American culture...

3. 3.1 MB UCSC Student Rosemary Gibbons asked a real good question about what would happen if this site were developed privately - Ann answers in a good wayÉ

4. 1.9 MB Ann Sayers introduced Ken Croale, director of the lab As we chatted, he spoke a REALLY interesting analogy on the travails of the lab, homeless for about 10 years and the holocaust California Natives endure(d) through violence and a Eurocentric imposed Diaspora.

5. 1.1 MB Why This Site? Lab Director Croale tells us why, here? Why this kind of choice is almost always determined to be the right one in Euro-Centric cultures.

COOL STUFF, OUTAKES, AND SO ON:

6. 3.5 MB The Coffee Panic! - every video project seems to go through one panic or anotherÉour was delivered hot at the coffee shack by Ann Marie - a few minutes before we moved to the site to begin filming! What! no clearance?!

7. 2.1 MB Legless Lizards! Hake! Rosemary is sort of taken aback when Ann described the 3,000 legless lizards that called the site home and were surgically removed (hmmm, ring a bell?) to a "safe" area where they and their kind could live in peace as long as the rivers shall flow - you get the picture.
