Our resource about history and living POMO people today
Our first small piece on the Clear Lake Pomo is actually
an Opinion piece written by
Calyton Duncan for the Lake County Record-Bee. This is in regards to an
effort to change the Mascot of Kelseyville High School to "Indians".
Kelsey was a squatter who in mainstream history is given credit for founding
the town, along with his accomplice, a man by the name of Stone. These men committed
atrocities on the Pomo Indigenous Americans.
Kelsey finally pushed the Pomo too far. Normlly a quiet and reverent people,
they rose up and killed him at his home. As a result of this, the U.S. Army
conducted ethnic cleansing in Lake, Sonoma and Mendocino counties. These depredations
on the peaceful populace included massacres of entire villages. More on this
later, video included.
